Recently appointed chief of the SEC’s new cryptocurrency enforcement branch, Ladan Stewart, has left the organization to become a partner at White & Case. Stewart worked for the SEC’s enforcement branch for eight years. Most recently, he was the head of the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit, which was established in September.
Serving as the head of the agency, Stewart spearheaded SEC charges against major players in the cryptocurrencycurrency space, including Coinbase. The regulator claimed that Coinbase was an unlicensed securities exchange and launched a lawsuit against the business in June 2018. Before joining Ripple Labs, Stewart was a member of the SEC’s legal team, which claimed that XRP wasn’t an unregistered securities.
With the introduction of new Bitcoin ETFs, Stewart is expected to expand his practice in cybersecurity and cryptocurrencycurrency, according to global legal firm White & Case.Her background ought to help White & Case as the SEC investigates additional cryptocurrencycurrency businesses. As it expands its business practice, the firm has also acquired partners, such as Taurie Zeitzer, a lawyer for private equity.
