On Thursday, Elon Musk sued Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company he co-founded with Altman, for allegedly abandoning the OpenAI purpose of creating AI for the benefit of humanity.
The case, filed in San Francisco, alleges that Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman approached Musk about forming an open-source nonprofit organization. Regardless of Tesla’s attorneys’ perspective, OpenAI’s current for-profit practice for seeking funds violates the initial agreement per.
Furthermore, the lawsuit accuses OpenAI of keeping details about its most advanced AI system, GPT-4, hidden rather than functioning transparently. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but left the board in 2018 to focus on Tesla and SpaceX.
OpenAI’s success with ChatGPT drew attention to the AI-powered tool sector, which is now highly competitive. The sudden debut of Chat GPT in November 2022 has sparked a frenzy of AI consumerization around the world.
Surprisingly, Altman was appointed to the open board of directors by the investors, who also expressed overlapping interests in preserving OpenAI’s original cause and vision in 2022. He had previously stepped down from the board due to this issue, but he eventually returned with the assistance of a new team.
OpenAI has yet to publicly respond to Musk’s complaint. However, the legal action highlights an unpleasant schism between Musk and the corporation he originally co-founded over the ethics of building and deploying sophisticated artificial intelligence systems. As consumer AI becomes more prevalent in society, the court’s decision may have an impact on OpenAI’s strategy.
