Two cryptocurrencycurrency companies have filed a motion to halt a federal survey on energy consumption in bitcoin mining, which will shortly be considered by a Texas court. A temporary restraining order was previously granted by Judge Alan Albright of the U.S. District Court for Western Texas against the survey carried out by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the Department of Energy.
The Texas Blockchain Council and Riot Platforms filed a lawsuit claiming the EIA lacked legal authorization to gather such extensive data on the amount of electricity used by cryptocurrencycurrency miners. The corporations believe that the poll may reveal confidential information and result in damage to them.
Judge Albright indicated the EIA had omitted steps in the process and questioned if the information request complied with regulations when he granted the survey a temporary stay. The reprieve shielded businesses from fines for noncompliance by temporarily blocking the survey.
The EIA survey addresses growing apprehensions regarding the significant energy consumption of cryptocurrencycurrency mining and its impact on the electrical system. The lawsuit’s complainant contends that the data demand unfairly singles out their business without a sufficient justification from the law or the public good.
