Today, the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) issued a public advisory warning investors to be wary of fraudulent websites masquerading as legitimate virtual asset trading platforms.
The SFC has identified two platforms: HSKEX, which claims to be Hash Blockchain Limited, also known as HashKey, and has URLs like www.hskexpro.com, www.hskex.com, www.hskexs.com, and www.hskexit.com.
Furthermore, www.oslexu.com and www.oslint.com were identified for impersonating OSL Digital Securities Limited.
These websites mimic the branding and visual appearance of licensed platforms, which may fool investors to believe they are dealing with legitimate companies.
The SFC’s warning comes after reports of people having difficulty withdrawing funds from these fake websites and being forced to pay hefty “fees and taxes” to access their possessions.
On March 4, 2024, the SFC took action against fraudulent operations by adding four imposter websites to its Suspicious Virtual Asset Trading Platforms Alert List.
The SFC recommends confirming platform legality through official channels such as the SFC’s Public Register of Licensed Persons and Registered Institutions and the List of Licensed Virtual Asset Trading Platforms. Furthermore, investors should check the counterparty’s identity before providing money or participating in transactions.
Over 22 applications have been made to the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for licenses to operate cryptocurrencycurrency exchanges in the region.
