The European Commission has promised to conduct official investigations into Google Inc. and Alphabet Inc. to examine whether these companies are entitled to follow the recently passed DMA. The agencies aim to implement the following activities. Examine the companies’ policies, paying close attention to the recently formed terms, conditions, and fees for app store developers.
Many developers, including Spotify, have been further irritated by Apple’s proposals to change double-sided commission and establish new STS. The EU will review whether these efforts are consistent with the key DMA precepts, which focus on promoting fair competition in online marketplaces.
For breaching the rule, the EU can fine corporations up to 10% of their annual global revenue; if the company violates the legislation again, the fine can increase to 20%. The committee expects to complete all of the investigations related to its mandate by the end of next year.
Meta Platforms Inc.’s plan may also be reviewed by the commission. It must assess whether it meets DMA standards for the monthly subscription rate for ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram.
Concurrently, the US Justice Department, sixteen state attorneys general, and antitrust complainants are suing Apple, alleging that the company has a monopoly on iPhone features, resulting in financial damages.
