A Nintendo 64 (N64) emulator using the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol was released by Pizza Ninjas, an NFT platform, enabling game data to be preserved on the blockchain.
Using Google’s Brotli compression, game file sizes can be lowered by about 80%, per more Pizza Ninja reports. This reduces the size of the files so that they can be shared among transactions or contained within a single Bitcoin block. It creates new opportunities for using the blockchain to store gaming history.
For $6,000, including the current Bitcoin transaction costs, Pizza Ninjas recently etched the classic game GoldenEye 64. File size reductions of approximately 80% can be attained with Brotli Compression. Pizza Ninjas said, “For instance, Goldeneye 64 is 12.4 MB when uncompressed, but with Brotli we can get it down to just 3.15 MB!”
This is sufficient to accommodate eight transactions under 400 KB or under one 4 MB Bitcoin block. A community interested in seeing these ancient games maintained permanently found that inscribing GoldenEye at 15 sats/vbyte only cost $6,000, thanks to now low network prices.
The Nintendo 64 sold more than 30 million units despite its 1996 release. Pizza Ninjas’ inventiveness makes it possible for important games from their collection to be preserved on the blockchain for upcoming generations.
