The ApeCoin community has overwhelmingly supported a groundbreaking proposal: registering “.APE” as a top-level domain (TLD) with ICANN, the global authority on domain names and IP addresses. This action is consistent with ICANN’s aim to deploy new generic top-level domains by 2026.
In a landslide vote, 91.68% of ApeCoin members approved the idea, with only 8.32% opposed. The objective is to collaborate with D3, a Web3 domain specialist, to transform.APE into an actual asset.
Fred Hsu, CEO of D3, stated that the domains they offer are adaptable and may be used on Web1, Web2, and Web3 platforms. He stressed the goal of transitioning over 5 billion Web2 users to Web3 through innovative domain usage.
D3 will lead the preparation and submission of the application to ICANN, which is estimated to take approximately a year. They also intend to introduce Ape-linked name tokens as quick Web3 identities for users.
Hsu plans to revolutionize domain ownership and usage, shaking up an industry that has witnessed little change in the last two decades.
Hsu sees tremendous economic possibilities in the.APE domains, underlining their significance as digital assets. ApeCoin DAO and D3 will share 50/50 revenue from Ape name tokens and.APE TLDs.
It is explained that TLD ownership is not feasible; instead, ICANN grants exclusive operating and monetization rights, which are renewed every ten years. The overall cost of the venture is three million ApeCoin, which includes ongoing operational expenses for D3 in handling the.APE namespace, as well as ApeCoin DAO marketing initiatives.
